题目：Native American (a.k.a. Indian) cultures of North America

演讲人：Mr. David Herrell

David Herrell is a native of Louisiana and Las Vegas and studied Liberal Arts as an undergraduate and Linguistics in graduate school, specializing in anthropological and sociolinguistics. Both his undergraduate and M.A. theses are about Native American cultures. He has been teaching since 1997 in the U.S., South Korea and the PRC. His mother’s family is mixed German and Cherokee and this is what sparked his interest in Native American cultures.

演讲内容简介：

I will introduce Native American (a.k.a. Indian) cultures of North America, including languages, foods, art, music, festivals, traditional clothing, social variation and philosophies, especially those concerning the environment and harmony with nature. I will present connections between Asian cultures/peoples and Native North Americans, including a common genetic heritage, e.g. Native Americans migrated from Asia through Siberia and Alaska during the last Ice Age and many similarities found in art, artifacts and philosophies. I will also talk about the Pre-Columbian (before 1492) cultural and linguistic areas as well the important nations and tribes including the Cherokee, Cheyenne, Choctaw, Sioux, Apache, Chinook, Iroquois, Navajo, Inuits (Eskimos) and Mohicans. Finally, I will talk about the interaction of Native Americans with other cultural groups post-1492, such as the various European empires spanning into the current situations of Native Americans in the modern U.S. and Canada.
