There is a very well-known quote by famous Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa that almost any person related to the lusophony world knows about: “A minha pátria é a língua portuguesa” | “My motherland/country is the Portuguese language”.

Basically that one sentence could sum up what I have been doing as a work until now: teaching Portuguese in a foreign country.

I was born in a medium-size city in the Northeast of Spain right in the middle of Madrid and Barcelona, called Zaragoza, where I lived and studied until I was 19 years old. In that part of the Iberian peninsula, apart from going to school and passing my childhood, I became passionate about the two things I am still passionate about: languages and music; in fact, I spent around twelve years getting a musical education at the local conservatory of music (violin and viola), while enjoying being an active member of several Youth Orchestras in both Spain and Portugal. Then, I decided I needed to take a life changing opportunity and to go the neighbouring coutry, Portugal, to pursue my dream: study a degree in Music, in Lisbon. But maybe fate (or “fado” as we say in Portuguese) put Chinese on my way for a reason. Although I started studying the language because I have always been curious about what I would call the not so commonly studied languages (ie. Asian languages, Finnish or Greek have always been on my list), somehow Chinese became more serious when I got accepted at the Leiria Polytechnic Institute for my bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting Chinese-Portuguese. The result: four years studying in three different institutions in two different countries Portugal and China – Macao and Beijing.

In my last semester at college I did an internship at the Confucious Institute in Lisbon and some time after graduatio I started my master’s degree in Audiovisual Translation (subtitling, dubbing), combining foreign languages with another passion, cinema. Finally in October 2012 my second Chinese adventure (this time as a teacher) began. First destination was Chongqing (Sichuan International Studies University). Then in October 2014 I landed in the island of Hainan (Hainan Foreign Languages College of Professional Education) and my most recent destination (maybe it was “fado”) is Zhuhai – BNUZ …where I hope I can pass on to the students who chose this language my own enthusiasm about Portuguese. Maybe it is in fact a big challenge but I am willing to accept it; I hope they will love the Portuguese language (and the lusophony) at least as much as I do.

Also, apart from languages, music and cinema, I do enjoy riding the bike, swimming, taking photographs, writing fiction and a blog (whenever I have time) and ocassionally, if there is an opportunity, getting myself on stage and having that butterflies in my stomach feeling while playing my viola for the people in front of me, no matter the size of the place or the audience.
