Mr. Martin Stannard

I''m English, and I''ve been in China, and at BNUZ (with the exception of one year) since 2005. I have a job title here – Coordinator of Overseas Staff – which means that, in addition to teaching, I''m responsible for the hiring of new (English-speaking) foreign teachers each year for the School of Foreign Languages.

I''m a poet and critic, but it won''t surprise anyone to hear that it''s difficult to make a living at that, although in the past I have had a good try. I went to university as a mature student (I was 28) and gained a First Class Honours degree from Middlesex University (Middlesex Polytechnic, as it was then) with a major in American Studies, and went on to University College London, where I gained an M.A. in English and American Literature. While I was studying for my Bachelor degree I spent one semester studying at California State University, San Francisco, the first of several visits to the USA.

For almost fifteen years after that I made a living as a poet, visiting schools and colleges as "visiting writer", and holding writing workshops at various places around the country. I would also give public readings of my work, and I''ve performed at many places in the UK, Europe and the USA. During this period I was published more and more and, I think, establishing a decent reputation in the English and American poetry world. I was also editor of a poetry magazine for a time, and I''m fortunate to now count some of the best poets and writers in Britain and the USA among my best friends.

After those fifteen years of freelancing, I was more than a little tired of always having to look for the next job, and I decided to take what could be described as a normal job with a telephone company. I stayed with them for ten years, and loved doing something I didn’t have to thinkmuch about, and being able to go home at night and write and read without having to worry about the state of my bank account or thinking about my next school visit.

In 2005, however, I was comfortable enough but a little bored, and decided to do something different. China is different. I came to Zhuhai in September of the same year and have been here ever since, except for one year I mentioned when I returned to England to take up a one-year Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellowship at Nottingham Trent University. The RLF had been holding the Fellowship open for me since late 2004, and they are prestigious things to be offered and to do, so I felt more than obliged to fulfill the obligation. Although I enjoyed it, and could have stayed for more than a year, I was always eager to come back to China as soon as possible.

As for my personal interests, my writing takes up a fair amount of time, and I have a new book of poems due for publication in January 2016. Not surprisingly, I''m an avid reader too. Music (mostly modern, but some classical – and my tastes are wide-ranging) is also really important to me: the second thing I do in the mornings is put on some music. The last thing I do at night (more or less) is turn it off.
