      Hey all y’all!

I’m a U.S. Air Force Brat and was born on the Space Coast of Florida. My father got stationed in Louisiana when I was very young and that is where I call home, although his family mostly lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, which I consider my second home. Louisiana is the land of the Cajuns and Creoles and our City is New Orleans. I started learning French at an early age, which was not uncommon in Louisiana and it is my second language. I have always had a very keen interest in languages and history and began a broad Liberal Arts undergraduate education at Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University, in Natchitoches, LA. L.S.C. was a rigorous program and we read all the great texts from the Bhagavad Gita to Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being and everything in between! While an undergrad, I also spent a semester as an exchange student in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, where I actually spent most of my study time at the Stichting Documentatiecentrum Homostudies at the University of Amsterdam, researching my undergrad thesis under the direction of Dr. Jan Willem Duyvendak. I completed my B.A. in 1995, with a Concentration in Humanities and Social Thought with minors in French and Anthropology. My undergrad thesis was about Native American gender systems and is titled The Construction of a Pan-Tribal Berdache Identity among Native North Americans.

I entered the Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA  in 1995, with the goals of earning an M.A. which would allow me to teach English overseas and also to sharpen my knowledge of Cajun and Creole languages and cultures. My focus quickly changed to the latter and I joined Dr. Sylvie Dubois’ research team. Our goal was to preserve as much as possible of Cajun and Creole French as well as the newly emerged dialect of Cajun English. This is an absolutely massive corpus, and I can offer a brief description via this abstract: http://lavis.as.ua.edu/abstracts/dubois.htm. While working with this amazing team of scholars, I also developed my own related research interest, namely the French spoken by the Houma Indians who live so far south of New Orleans on the coastal bayous and marshes, which are quickly disappearing, My M.A thesis is titled The Linguistic and Cultural Situation of the Houma Indians of South Louisiana and I completed my M.A. in Applied Linguistics in 1997. At this time I also began teaching my first courses, as a T.A., “Spoken American English” for International Undergrads.

I went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Professional linguistics and continued working with the Cajun/Creole project. My dissertation was about shortened cardinal vowels and diphthongs in Cajun English. For personal reasons, I left the Ph.D. program in 2003 and began my career as an International ESL Instructor. Since 1997, I have taught ESL/EFL in the United States, South Korea (on and off for 5 years) and Guangzhou, China for 3 years. I also worked with immigrants and refugees in Las Vegas for 3 years, and most recently joined the faculty at the School of Foreign Languages at BNUZ. I am very happy and honored to be here and look forward to all the opportunities, challenges and rewards this experience will provide.
