Ms. Rebecca Reel

Hello, my name is Rebecca Reel and I thrilled to be a part of the BNUZ staff.  I am from Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the United States. I spent 14 years as a teacher in the public schools. The bulk of my career has been spent teaching high school English as a Second Language to Hispanic students.  Most of which were very poor and could not read and write Spanish.  Most of which were born in the United States.  It’s very strange how that happens. My first job was as a middle school band director at a high poverty school. And I spent one year teaching elementary music. So at this point in my career I have taught every grade level from kindergarten to 12th grade and now university students!

My undergraduate degree is from the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts where I majored in clarinet. Only about 25% of students who study at UNCSA are able to graduate and I’m proud I was one of them.  In my 20s, I was a freelance clarinet player and teacher but I haven’t touched the instrument in about seven years. I have an MAT (Masters of Arts in Teaching) from Salem College. Although the Master’s Program at Salem College is for men and women, the undergraduate school is for women only and is the 2nd oldest women’s college in America. There I had a 4.0 grade point average and made a perfect score on the comprehensive exam.

I was born in North Carolina and lived there for 39 years until I decided to move to China in 2015.  From age 0-10 I lived in a small town about an hour from Winston-Salem. When I was 10 I moved to Winston-Salem and lived there for 29 years. My mother and step-father were both career public school teachers.  So, I’ve spent all my life knowing a huge percentage of the people in my city. Until moving to China, I had rarely been to the supermarket or movie or run errands without seeing someone I know! So don’t be surprised if I want to stop and talk if I run into you! One of my favorite things about life as a foreigner in Zhuhai is that most foreigners know each other.

I have tons of hobbies and I’m rarely bored. I enjoy songwriting, singing, and playing the guitar. I’ve written over 100 songs. Many of my songs are allegories, stories, or other social commentary. Some are funny and some are serious.  I enjoy riding my bike and I have taken numerous biking vacations in the US. Before moving to China, I had mainly traveled in the US. Some of my favorite places are Seattle, Nashville, Washington, DC, Asheville, and Athens Georgia.  Since moving to China, I’ve gotten to travel to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. I’m so happy that Zhuhai is near Hong Kong and Macau and I visit them regularly.

I enjoy concerts, live music, the ballet, the opera, plays, gallery openings and other cultural events. I like interesting movies. I also enjoy talking on the phone to my two best friends in the Unites States who are my biggest cheerleaders in encouraging me to jump off the cliff and move to China!

Life is great at BNUZ!
