Hello, and greetings from Calgary, Canada (eh!).

I’m originally from a farm in southern Alberta.  When I was young I watched the sun rise over the prairies and set over the mountains, and I learned how to raise cattle and tend crops.  As soon as I was old enough, I ran off to Edmonton for my post-secondary studies (economics).   During this time, I also lived in Haiti for a couple of years, where, among other things, I learned to speak Haitian Creole.

After graduation I worked in accounting for a few years, and in 2002 I decided to honour a long family tradition of working as an educator.  I moved to Korea, where I taught English to students of all ages, kindergarten to university.   While in Korea I also learned to speak (some) Korean and brushed up on my French.

Throughout this period, I pursued postgraduate studies in both economics of education and applied linguistics, and took up martial arts (primarily judo and hapkido).  My work in economics of education gave me a useful set of poverty alleviation skills which I would use, for among other things, to set up a community development foundation.  For a few years, during my vacations, I worked in a poverty stricken region of central sub-Saharan Africa, attempting to address health and hygiene concerns for young women struggling to access late primary and secondary education.  In Korea I continued work on my judo credentials as I spent my vacations in central Africa.  In 2013, when my contract in Korea was finished, I decided to return to Canada for a few years to spend time with friends and family.  In Canada I did a bit of judo coaching, reacquainted myself with family and friends, spent time in the mountains and bought a house.

Professionally, my CV lists college English, academic writing, debate, creative writing, job interview skills, TOEIC listening, video production and music appreciation in the teaching section.  I have also served in various teacher training and administrative roles.

In my spare time I like to read philosophy and ride motorcycles.  In Canada, during the summer, I would drive motorcycle through the Rocky Mountains, an experience aesthetically rich and valuable on its own, while at the same time contributing to my overall quality of life.  The sun shining as I push the speed limit, perched atop my loud, grumbly motorcycle, immersing myself in the wind and the local flora and fauna, navigating through a challenging, windey mountain pass... This kind of experience leads us to consider the value of beauty.  Romantics, and motorcycle riders the world over, will tell you that some experiences are worthwhile simply because they satisfy the need to feed our soul.

I arrived in Zhuhai on September 2, 2016, excited to begin teaching at BNUZ.  This next chapter of my life is not just unwritten, it is largely unmapped and unplanned.  I am lucky in that regard - having adapted my lifestyle to the needs and responsibilities of an international educator, I am able to take advantage of overseas opportunities when they present.  I anticipate this chapter being an amazing adventure, immersing myself in a different culture and language, making a contribution to the academic lives of my students as they seek to live lives they choose to value.
