At 3:40 p.m. on October 14th and October 21st, the SFL held discussion sessions on the teaching of Reading & Writing of College English in Liyun A315 and Liyun A309.
Ms. Li Lei, Director of the DCE and Ms. Wang Na, Vice Director of the DCE were the hosts for the discussion sessions. The new native English teachers who teach College English and the Chinese teachers attended the meetings. They divided into several groups, each of which consisted of both Chinese and native English teachers. They discussed how to teach Unit 2 of 21 Century College English 1 and Unit 4 of New Standard College English 4. After the discussions, every group chose a representative to make a presentation to summarize their discussions and share with other groups.
The discussions focused on three main aspects. Firstly, the teachers talked about their different teaching organization and teaching methods. Secondly, the Chinese teachers and English teachers have different strengths and focuses in their teaching that they could share with each other and learn from each other. For example, the Chinese teachers asked the usage of some special words in English native countries, and the native English teachers asked something about the CET4. Thirdly, they discussed some problems in teaching and figured out solutions together. Common problems, including variety of students, big classes, difficulty in handling translation exercises and in motivating students, were discussed.
The two meetings were a great platform for the teachers to learn from each other and to figure out how to teaching Reading & Writing of College English in a more effective fashion.
