The thesis defense for English Majors of 2011 was held by the Faculty of Foreign Languages in Liyun Building on April 23. Thirty-one teachers supervised the theses of this batch of students, including Professor Tao Wenhao, Associate Professor Lv Hongbo and Associate Professor Zhan Huichun.
There were 10 teams for the thesis defense, each of which consisted of 3 or 4 tutors and 20 or so graduates. During the defense, every student made a presentation, and the teachers asked some questions related to the thesis. Many students spoke fluently and expounded clearly with confidence. The theses covered a variety of English-related subjects, including linguistics, literature, translation, teaching, culture and so on. There were quite a number of interesting titles. For example, one thesis discussed the differences in the supporting of the aged between China and America, and another analyzed the language quoted from the Bible in some U.S presidential inauguration speeches.
In hosting the thesis defense of Team 1, Dean Tao Wenhao pointed out that thesis writing of the English majors of our faculty had been improving and that an excellent thesis called for originality and creativity.
