Martin Stannard、Mr. David Riddiford、Ms. Linda J. Visner、Mr. Brett Gearing和Mr. Miguel Munevar。

English Corner-Chinese in the Eyes of Foreigners

Reporter: He Wenyi

On May 27th, many teachers and students gathered at the English Corner spending the pleasant time. Foreign teachers Mr. Martin Stannard, Mr. David Riddiford, Ms. Linda J. Visner, Mr. Brett Gearing and Mr. Miguel Munevar attended it.

Hearing that David was from Australia, a student raised a question about the Australians’ impression of Chinese people. David said nowadays, quite a lot of Chinese people can be seen in different cities of Australia, especially in Melbourne. China was Australia’s biggest trading partner, so Australians thought highly of Chinese people and had a good relationship with them. The Chinese people there, to some degree, had developed Australia’s economy. However, some critics held the opinions that Chinese people drove up the cost of living and the price of houses.

Brett mentioned some actual conditions of China towns in America. In his view, many Chinese people in China towns could not speak much English and most of them liked to open a Chinese restaurant where the food was relatively cheap. What’s more, the rules in China towns tended to be a china version. For example, the boss who managed the buses in China town might not totally obey the American rules, which made some Americans uncomfortable and they even considered it was very dangerous to go to China towns.

If you had an opportunity to study, travel or work aboard, how would you behave?
