王东风教授——意义的不同类型与翻译

5月22日下午3:30,中山大学王东风教授在乐育C105为外院师生举办了题为《意义的不同类型与翻译》的讲座。外国语学院院长陶文好主持了本场讲座。

王东风教授是中山大学翻译学院常务副院长和翻译研究中心主任、中国译协理论和教学委员会副主任、中国英汉语比较研究会常务理事、广州外事翻译学会副会长、《中国翻译》和《外语研究》编委、广州外语外贸大学高级翻译学院客座教授和文科基地兼职研究员。他的主要研究方向为翻译学、理论语言学和比较文学。

讲座一开始,王东风教授就向在座同学强调:学翻译,学好语义学尤为重要!他把讲座分为概念意义和关联意义两个模块并分别进行了详细的讲解。王东风教授认为,概念意义是语言交流中最主要的意义。中国人学外语最大的坎就在于两种语言认知差异所造成的困惑。紧接着,他介绍了翻译时最常出现的几种错误及其解决方法。大量生动例子辅以王东风教授幽默风趣的讲解,同学们在笑声中对翻译有了全新的认知。

之后,王东风教授谈到了语言交流中的第二大意义:关联意义,在这之下还分为含蓄意义、文体意义、情感意义、反射意义、搭配意义五个层面。他依次向同学们介绍了不同意义的定义、特点及其实际运用。多年丰富的翻译教学经验令王东风教授得以以一种辩证的眼光看待翻译界的各种理论规律,并提出许多独到的见解。例如,在翻译脚注问题上,他认为通过意译把典故省略的方法不妥当。“翻译是文化的使者,不应向读者隐瞒文化的真相。”一句话体现了王东风教授对翻译深刻的思考。

本场讲座不仅加深了同学们对翻译的认识,而且也令在座老师对翻译教学有了新的理解。讲座末尾,不少老师和同学们提出问题,王东风教授都一一耐心解答。

Prof. Wang Gives Lecture on Translation

At 3:30 PM on 22nd May, Prof. Wang Dongfeng from Sun Yat-sen University gave a lecture entitled The Different Types of Meaning and Translation in Leyu C105.

At the beginning of the lecture, Prof. Wang told the students that the knowledge of semantics is significant for translation learning. With this theme, he illustrated two most important meanings in language communication, conceptual meaning and associative meaning. Prof. Wang thought that what confuses the Chinese learners most is the difference of conceptual meaning of two language. So he introduced to the audience some of the most frequently made mistakes and the solutions. The large number of examples and his humorous presenting style helped the students get a brand new idea of translation in a relaxing setting.

Prof. Wang also introduced some basic definitions, characteristics and the practical application of associative meaning, which, he maintained, falls into connotative meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, collocational meaning and thematic meaning. With years of experience in translating and teaching, he was able to figure out the various theories and doctrines in translation from a dialectic perspective. For instance, he disapproved of those free translations which skip the footnote part. “As translation bridges two languages, one should not conceal the truth of culture from the readers. ”He said.
