On September 9th, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) held a teaching training session for 13 newly-employed native English teachers in Liyun Building A404 and A312. Present at the training session were Vice deans Xie Qingli and Xie Wenting of the SFL, Director Li Lei and Vice Director Wang Na of College English Department, and Mr. Martin Stannard, the coordinator of foreign affairs.
First of all, Vice Dean Xie Wenting introduced the Chinese and foreign teachers present, and then the training session started in an amiable and warm atmosphere. Ms. Xie distributed and explained guidance for English native teachers. She began with relevant regulations of the university and the school, particularly some rules and responsibilities applicable both to the Chinese and foreign teachers. Ms. Xie also pointed out that besides teaching, the school also encourages foreign teachers to participate in the students’ extracurricular activities, for instance, foreign teachers’ lectures every two weeks and the English corner every Wednesday.
Then, Vice Dean Xie Qingli explicated teaching affairs for both English majors and non-English majors. Mr. Xie, with the help of power point, introduced the requirements of certain issues concerning the teaching for English majors and non-English majors. He particularly expounded on the teaching of college English. College English teaching includes non-conversational teaching and conversational teaching (College English Book One, Two, Three and Four), and the latter again consists of oral English teaching, listening, writing and reading. In accordance with “College English Curriculum Requirements”, Mr. Xie explained the requirements and marks for students in daily performance, quizzes and final exam. In order to acquaint the foreign teachers with the teaching of College English, he stressed the importance of the CET4 for a college student and introduced the teaching steps a Chinese teacher usually follows.
Lastly, Director Li Lei led the foreign teachers to the language lab and demonstrated the facilities and the working software in the lab. Ms. Li also elucidated comprehensively the teaching arrangements for the listening class.
When the session came to the end, the English native teachers said that they have reaped a lot from it and they would come home, study intently the training material and try to adjust to the teaching environment and meet the requirements of the school as soon as possible.
