The first Portuguese Corner of this semester was held at 6pm on Thursday. Ms. Alba I. García Troya attended the Portuguese Corner. After self-introduction, students started to bring out their questions. Because of the double cultural backgrounds of Alba, students asked her opinions on language acquisition. As an experienced language learner, Ms. Alba had many feelings and experiences to share with the students.
As far as she was concerned, language was used to convey human emotions and served as an important tool in inter-personal communication. Where there were human beings, there was languages. What was more, language was one of the vital components of culture, and without language, there couldn’t be any culture. Only through language could culture be passed down generation by generation. In other words, without language, it would be difficult to preserve human civilization, which would give rise to the quick disappearance of culture.
Alba also gave students more information about terminology. In the end of the Portuguese Corner, Alba clarified the CAPLE for students, which was a test to assess the levels of the Portuguese learners.
