“Freshmen Cup” Debate Competition (Final) of FSL was smoothly held in LiYun B306 on October 8th, 2017. Head coaches from schools of Chinese, Design, Logistics, Laws and Administration and Foreign Languages were invited as judges.
The competition began at 7:30 after the self introduction of debaters and the introduction of debate rules by the hostesses. Two sides of the debaters heatedly debated around the topic "whether the gangsterdom is maintained by interests or moral justification." Then, the first debater in pro group He Jierui wonderfully made the point of“gangsterdom is maintained by interests”. She started with the definition of gangsterdom and demonstrated a series of arguments. The first debater in cons group Ling Xiaobing proved that relationships maintained by moral justification were much more lasted and stable, and the relationships of gangsterdom were not so easy to be destroyed by the conflicts of interests. Both of the pro and con were calm and clearly declared their standpoint. In the next link, both sides of the debaters played all their cards to make counterargument more competitive like a tongue war.
Finally the pro group stood out, consisted of English majors: He Jierui and Lin Jingjing from class onea, Yu Liangxuan from class three and Suo Yuan from class four. And Yu Liangxuan was awarded the best debater.
The competition was devoted to provide the best stage of speech and debate for students to show their abilities. During three weeks of preparation, the coaches has improved the debaters’ presentation skills, expression skills and the level of eloquence through the training form of “listen more, think more, practice more, and compete more” to cultivate the positive social skills. It has accordingly led students to practice brainstorm and improve the skills and level of speech and debate. (Translated by Zhou Ziqi)
