4月15日晚，第三场外籍教师系列讲座在乐育C108举行。本场讲座的主题是“固定印象——好的，坏的还是令人厌恶的？”，主讲的外籍教师是Ms. Bronagh Mooney。

首先，Bronagh向同学们解释了固定印象这个词的意思和来源，它是古希腊的一个词汇。具体解释为对国家、文化以及性别的一种固定的刻板印象和反应。那这种反应是怎么形成的呢？有同学问道。Bronagh详细地阐述了这是因为在社会中的人们需要区分出谁和他们是一类人而谁又和他们有所不同。研究表明人们喜欢、想要也需要去将这个世界分类。每一类人都有他们共同的喜好和习惯，这尤其体现在国家和性别方面。随后，Bronagh向同学们举了几个关于国家的固定印象的例子。比如说一提起爱尔兰人，人们都会认为爱尔兰人喜欢喝酒，而提起英国人，人们都会认为英国人聊天只会谈论天气。但Bronagh提出，并不是表示所有的爱尔兰人或是英国人都是这样，这只是人们对于这些国家的一些传统的看法，一种固定的刻板印象。

进而，Bronagh分享了一些动画片在对于刻板印象以及人与人之间存在的偏见现象的讽刺。她分析了固定印象的优点和缺点，一方面人们对于一些现象的传统的固定的想法会促进人们对于一些不同的形式能做出很快的反应，但另一方面它也让我们忽略了人与人之间的不同。例如，传统思想认为女生都喜欢粉色而男生都喜欢蓝色，但实际表明并不都是这样。因此运用这种思想去分析问题时有时会得到错误的答案。

通过这次讲座，同学们都应该思考一下我们对于一些事情是否存在偏见，是否来源于固定的印象。

A lecture: Understanding Stereotypes: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

On the evening of April 15, Ms. Bronagh Mooney held a lecture entitled “understanding stereotypes: the good, the bad, and the ugly” in LeYu BuildingC108.

First of all, Ms. Bronagh introduced the origin of “stereotype” to the students, which was a Greek word. It meant a solid impression to the country, culture and gender. But how had the impression developed? Bronagh expounded those social animals needed to be able to distinguish who was a friend and who was not. Research in psychology showed that people needed to categorize the world. Every group had their common habits. After that, Bronagh listed some examples. If people talked about the Irish, they would think the Irish liked drinking. But for British, their habit of talking about weather came to people’s mind. Bronagh told the students that not all the Irish or British liked this. This condition only showed that people had stereotypes on these countries.

Then, Bronagh shared a lot of cartoons about the stereotypes. She analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of stereotypes. On one hand, the stereotypes made us react quickly to situations. On the other hand, it made us ignore the differences between individuals. For example, the stereotypes believed that the girls liked pink and the boys liked blue，but it was not true in fact. Therefore, the way we thought about people might not be true.

The students should think about their stereotypes on some things through this lecture.
